DESERT CULTURES 

Like the nomads of the Thar desert, our luxury camp moves around from place to place, bringing you occasional opportunities to discover the cultures of the most remote and rarely-visited regions of the Thar desert with the local inhabitants who know it best.

These are landscapes of extraordinary beauty and diversity. We do not pitch permanent camps in these locations, believing it better for tourism to tread lightly. The camps are exceptional for their contact with the people of the desert.

Our Thar Desert camps are developed with people from nearby villages. You visit remote desert hamlets, explore ancient temples and water systems and discover the ways in which people, plants and wildlife adapt to the desert climate.

Luxury mobile camps are available for groups of eight or more, or occasionally there may be opportunities to join a camp.

You can visit craft villages, take camel safaris in the desert, explore ancient temples and learn about desert food in cooking sessions. Traditional Rajasthani music is a feature and there may be opportunities to visit local musician communities or spend a night in a desert hamlet, depending on location.

As well as a warm welcome from our knowledgeable team, you experience a genuine contact with local people, bringing insights into the life and the culture of the Thar in a way which is rarely possible. Expect clear, sunny days, campfires and cosy quilts, and a rare and rewarding experience of the desert.

We offer a special Christmas and New Year tour which offers a mix of interesting hotels and real adventure, with Christmas in our beautifully-restored haveli in Mukundgarh, and a night in a village where you share in the spellbinding power of the dance, music and poetry of the desert communities.
